Scala Dei Pregartera 2021

€60,00

Pregartera is a limited edition from the historic old vines of Pregona, Artigots, and Era, located in the Montsant mountain range. The altitude of the vineyards and the clay-rich soils define the elegance, freshness, and exceptional character of this Grenache, available exclusively at the winery’s own shop.

The 2021 vintage followed an unusually humid winter and spring, including the Filomena snowstorm, which left significant water reserves in the soil. This led to a normal vegetative cycle and an abundant harvest under a mild Mediterranean summer. Despite rains in early September, the thermal contrast in the following weeks guaranteed perfect ripening. The result is highly fruity wines with ripe tannins and slightly lower alcohol content than usual. Wines to be enjoyed now or laid down for aging.

Pregona, Artigots, and Era are three vineyards located above the Cartoixa de Scala Dei, on the southern slopes of the Montsant mountain range. Planted during the 1970s at an altitude between 550 and 650 meters, they feature a diverse geology of deep soils with yellow and red clays, pebbles, and gravel. These historic estates of Cellers de Scala Dei, with both north and south orientations, uphold the legacy of the monks who were already cultivating Grenache here five centuries ago.

With this wine, we sought to recover a winemaking heritage from Priorat that traces back to the first bottlings of Cellers de Scala Dei. After researching how those 1970s bottles were crafted, we vinified Pregartera.

The harvest took place during the first week of October, using small crates to preserve the integrity of the fruit. The grapes were trodden to ferment with 100% of the stems in 2,000-liter a concrete vat, undergoing spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Finally, the wine was aged for 12 months in a 700-liter second-fill French oak barrel.
